The City & County of San Francisco is seeking applications for a member of the public to join the Committee on Information Technology (COIT) in a voluntary capacity. COIT is San Francisco’s technology governance and policymaking body, holding monthly public meetings to improve transparency and accountability in our technology operations.

About COIT

COIT is a forum for City leadership to coordinate and collaborate to make citywide technology decisions. COIT is composed of 13 department heads representing each of the major service areas, including five permanent members consisting of the Mayor, the President of the Board of Supervisors, the Controller, the City Administrator, and the CIO. Joining the Committee are also two non-voting members from the public to advise on City technology issues.

Some examples of recent discussions at COIT include:

  • Review and evaluation of proposed technology projects from City agencies. In FY 2019-20, COIT recommended allocating $36.6 million of the General Fund to various technology projects citywide. (May 3, 2019)
  • Provide feedback on the proposed Stop Secret Surveillance Ordinance and how to best promote transparency with surveillance technologies. (March 21, 2019)
  • Discussion on the five-year Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Plan and other citywide strategic initiatives like San Francisco’s Digital Equity Strategy. (February 21, 2019)

Desired Experience & Commitment

Public members should have a range of experience and a demonstrated interest in technology and public policy. We appreciate voices that can share their perspective as a resident of San Francisco, but also are leaders in the technology space. In particular, we are interested in adding voices that can help us think through the privacy and security issues of our technologies.

In terms of time commitment, the public member will sit on COIT in a voluntary capacity to help advise City leaders. Meetings generally last two hours and are regularly scheduled on the third Thursday of each month. On occasion, special meetings will be called to discuss specific agenda items but will be scheduled far in advance.

In addition to the meetings, your input may be called on for a variety of issues as needed. We value our public member’s expertise and input, and really see this as an opportunity to learn from each other.

Application Materials

Please fill out the following questionnaire for a few basic questions. As part of the application process, we will also review your resume.
